While the need for affordable housing in San Mateo County is great, there are a number of factors that make developing affordable rental and ownership options a great challenge: the scarcity of land, the high cost of real estate in the County, the high cost of construction/development, the current economic climate, federal housing policies that are created nationally but are hard to "fit" locally, parking and water requirements, etc.  Developing affordable housing requires great planning and coordination between the partners involved in each project (the County/Department of Housing, local cities, developers, etc.) working together  acquiring land and/or existing housing, finding additional funders, swapping parcels and a variety of complex, innovative approaches involved with each project.

The map below shows the close to 600 units across the County in either pre-development or that are already under construction.
